Faith-Based Affordable Housing
Rhode Island simply doesn’t have enough homes to meet the needs of our residents. The shortage of homes available and affordable is particularly acute for our neighbors with the lowest incomes - seniors living on fixed incomes, working families earning lower wages, and people with disabilities.
Faith-based institutions across Rhode Island own land and property that is underutilized and could be suitable for housing development. Allowing faith-based institutions to build affordable housing on their land can create new opportunities for much needed affordable homes.
This Bill Will:
Allow faith-based institutions to build affordable housing with property they own
Creates a streamlined approval process for affordable housing development on faith-based institutional land
Aligns with the state and federal low-income housing tax credit (LIHTC) rules and regulations
